University Credit Across Nevada
(UCAN):
Registration and Information for
Academic Credit Courses
Academic Credit Fees for Fall 2008
Undergraduate per credit - $133.50
Graduate per credit - $202
Other fees may be assessed to cover special costs associated with the program.
Nonresident fees are assessed where applicable; for information, visit: www.ss.unr.edu/records/sched.asp.
Academic Credit Registration
Requirements
All students who have never attended the University of Nevada, Reno and have
not paid the application fee must pay a one-time, nonrefundable application
fee of $60 if they wish to enroll in undergraduate or graduate credit courses.
Students registering for noncredit courses are exempt from this fee.
If you have changed your name since first enrolling at the university, it is important to change it in university records to assure that academic credits will be applied to your transcript. Visit the university's records website to download and submit a change of name form: www.ss.unr.edu/records/forms.asp.
Where noted, some courses/sections require registration through the university's ePAWS system. To access ePAWS, visit: www.unr.edu.
Early Registration Instructions
Please note PREregistration requirements at right. There are two ways to register:
1. Online. After you complete the easy seven step process, including payment and immunizations, you are ready for class.
2. If you do not complete online registration, unless otherwise noted, an on-site registration will take place 30 minutes prior to the start of the class. Students must stop at the on-site registration desk and complete a Registration Form, which is the document that enrolls each student. The information on the form is official. Changes due to enrollment error can only be made during the semester of enrollment. When registering, students must carefully consider their choices: undergraduate vs. graduate, letter grade vs. S/U, etc. Students will not be given a grade or credit and will not be enrolled in the course without the Registration Form on file.
Textbooks and Materials
Most courses will require purchase of textbook(s) and/or instructional packet(s).
Materials will be available for purchase during the 30-minute registration
period prior to the first class, unless otherwise noted.
"S/U Only" Courses and "S/U" Option
Most academic credit courses offered through Extended Studies are available
for a letter grade. Some may be taken for S/U (pass/fail) only. These are
indicated in the university's General Catalog. It is the responsibility
of the student to determine whether an "S/U Only" course will
meet the student's needs. When the S/U option is chosen for a letter-grade
course, a grade of "S" (satisfactory) is awarded upon achievement
equivalent to a "C" or above for undergraduate courses or a "B" or
above for graduate courses.
Grade Reports
The university does not distribute final grade reports by mail. Students
may access their final grades by using ePAWS or by calling (775) 784-4700
to obtain
a free transcript. To access ePAWS, visit: www.unr.edu. Students should
review final grades for accuracy and report any discrepancies immediately.
The university
posts grades on transcripts only once a semester, regardless of how early
in the semester the course may end. This may affect your timing when choosing
to take a course, particularly one needed to meet recertification deadlines.
A mark of "I" is automatically changed to "F" if
the "incomplete" is
not made up by the last day of the next regular semester (Summer Session
excluded).
Make-up Exams (for EDE Courses only)
If the course instructor allows make-up exams, the make-up exam will be
administered by a university-approved proctor at the student's expense
($12.12 per hour, minimum).
Nondegree Students
An individual without a bachelor's degree who is not admitted to a
degree program is considered a nondegree student and may register for a
maximum of
six undergraduate credits per semester. A maximum of 32 credits earned
as a nondegree student is acceptable toward a baccalaureate degree.
Graduate
Credit
Only students who have earned a bachelor's degree may enroll for graduate
credit (500-799). Students who attempt to enroll for graduate credit without
a bachelor's degree will be administratively moved into the undergraduate
section, if any, or dropped from the course. Students who desire graduate
credit but have not established status with the university's Graduate
School must complete a Graduate Special Application form and pay a one-time
application
fee of $60.
Dropping A Course
A class cannot be dropped simply by discontinuing attendance. To drop a
course, please call the Extended Studies office in Reno as soon as possible.
Cancellation and Refund Policy
If a class is cancelled by Extended Studies, a full refund will be issued
and enrolled students will be notified via phone and/or email.
Refund/Transfer
of Fees
Academic Credit Classes:
A 50 percent refund of registration fees will be authorized to students
officially withdrawing from courses during the first 20 percent of each
class's
scheduled meetings, except for Independent Learning and Electronic Distance
Education (EDE) classes, to which special provisions apply. EDE course refunds
are handled in accordance with the university's refund policies for on-campus
courses.
Important
Preregistration Requirement
Courses will be cancelled if the minimum number of PAID pre-registrations
is not received by FIVE working days before class begins (unless otherwise
noted).
It is important that students contact Extended Studies as early as possible. Not later than FIVE working days before a class begins, students must pre-register and prepay online, by mail, by phone, or in person with the community coordinator where the class is being held or with Extended Studies in Reno. For more information, call us at (775) 784-4046 or 1-800-233-8928.
