About the Instructor
Berch Berberoğlu, Ph.D., is Foundation Professor of sociology and director of graduate studies in sociology at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he has been teaching and conducting research for the past 34 years.
He was born in Istanbul, is knowledgeable about Turkish history, culture, politics, and society, and has lectured at a number of universities in Turkey, including Istanbul University, Boğaziçi University, Koç University, Sabancı University, Istanbul Bilgi University, Marmara University, Akdeniz University, Ankara University, and the Middle East Technical University, among others.
Dr. Berberoğlu has written and edited 28 books and many articles. His most recent books include Labor and Capital in the Age of Globalization (2002), Globalization of Capital and the Nation-State (2003), Nationalism and Ethnic Conflict: Class, State, and Nation in the Age of Globalization (2004), Globalization and Change: The Transformation of Global Capitalism (2005), The State and Revolution in the Twentieth Century: Major Social Transformations of Our Time (2007) and Class and Class Conflict in the Age of Globalization (2009).
Dr. Berberoğlu's latest book is Globalization in the 21st Century: Labor, Capital, and the State on a World Scale (2010). He is currently working on a new book titled Beyond the Global Capitalist Crisis which will be published by Ashgate in 2011. His areas of specialization include political economy, globalization, development, political sociology, nationalism and ethnonational conflict, class/race/gender, and comparative-historical sociology.
Dr. Berberoğlu is Series Editor for Palgrave Macmillan on the book series "Social Movements and Transformation" and serves as Series Editor for Ashgate Publishing on the book series "Globalization, Crises, and Change."
Dr. Berberoğlu will lead the lectures, field trips and tours throughout the program with the assistance of local graduate student mentors.
